Ravenna Method – Ancient and Modern with Sue Giannotti
The Ravenna Method, also known as the double-reverse technique, offers the mosaic artist a third option for working (beyond direct and indirect methods), and is ideal for both recreating ancient mosaics as well as creating modern works. In this 5-day workshop, students will make two mosaics, first using specific images from iconic ancient mosaics, setting smalti and/or marble tesserae into a temporary clay bed and then learning the transfer process to a permanent substrate. Students will then create a second, smaller work in a more modern design. This versatile technique is taught today in several studios in Ravenna. The use of the school’s vast selection of smalti and stone, as well as our excellent tools, is included in the cost of the workshop.
Prerequisite: Hammer & Hardie or by permission of CMS Director.
