Smalti Dimensions with Sue Giannotti – TO BE ANNOUNCED

Expand your smalti experience and explore the use of large scale tesserae. Join our Visiting Artist Sue Giannotti in in this 4-day workshop that focuses on the smalti techniques often seen in contemporary European mosaics: chunky textural B-cuts, andamento alternatives, and color and value techniques-all designed for added impact. While easily used in landscape and abstract art, these skills can be helpful in any type of mosaic. Using smalti from our huge inventory or Orsoni and Dona glass, the class will go beyond the small brick-shaped cuts to explore the large scale cuts and study why, when and how to incorporate both sizes into a mosaic. Students will learn to expand their Hammer & Hardie skills to manipulate larger pieces of smalti for texture and interesting andamento options. Students should bring  sketchbook and between 4 and 6 design inspirations (photos, sketches, recommended size 8’ x 10’) as starting points for their mosaic. Workshop includes materials and the use of tools. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Prerequisite: Direct Method, Drawing for Andamento, Hammer & Hardie
