Creating Abstract Mosaic with Stone-Listening to the Rocks with Sophie Drouin and Bill Buckingham
In this hands on workshop participants will learn how to create abstract mosaics that successfully achieve organic and creative effects of texture and design using rocks, minerals and other less traditional materials. You will explore other properties, strengths and cleaving potential of different rocks and minerals that are compatible with mosaic making. You will look at how to broaden the mosaic “languages” that one can speak allowing for more dramatic results in a wider range of texture, andamento and design. Participants will create their own small abstract mosaic using materials provided and/or one or more anchor elements from their own collection.
This workshop should particularly benefit those intermediate to advanced mosaic artists who are interested in abstract mosaic art using new and unusual materials.Sophie Drouin has been a mosaicist since 1997. Her first mosaic instructor was her father, who was an artist and mosaic instructor trained in Academia schools in Florence and Venice, Italy. In addition to being and artist and a teacher in musical arts for more than 20 years, Ms Drouin offers mosaic workshops at Art Bites Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario.
Bill Buckingham is the founder of Mosaic Rocks, an on-line store specializing in natural stone tesserae for mosaic artists. Mr. Buckingham’s journey into mosaics began with more traditional materials but has since moved in a direction of stone where he specializes in representational and abstract fine art mosaics primarily using marble and other exotic natural materials. Mr. Buckingham is the founder of the Mosaic Atlas website and publisher of the yearly Mosaic Yearbook CD, a compilation of mosaic art from artists throughout the world.
This class is limited to 20 students.

1-Day Smalti Workshop
Smalti is one of the oldest and most original materials of mosaic art. This thick glass tile holds light the way no other material can. Our exquisite smalti is manufactured at the Orsoni family factory in Venice, Italy using the same ancient techniques and traditions passed down through the generations. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artist many possibilities to achieve dynamic mosaic works of art.
In this one day intensive workshop we will explore this beautiful traditional material by teaching students how to cut and set smalti, use tools such as a hammer and hardie as well as the more contemporary wheeled cutters. Each student will create a 6"x6" mosaic panel. Design, color and composition will also be covered. The class includes tools, handouts and a beautiful selection of Orsoni Italian smalti. This workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced students.
