Architectural Mosaics with Gary Drostle
London based artist Gary Drostle has been coming to CMS since 2006 and we are proud to offer his expertise annually to our students. This is an exclusive opportunity to learn about creating large-scale mosaic projects. This 5 day exclusive Large Scale Mosaic workshop provides students with the opportunity to learn the considerations, organization and logistics that go into producing large scale and public works. Students learn the indirect technique to enable the creation of larger works off-site. These techniques are useful for working with community groups, and creating floor, wall, and ceiling mosaics.
Design considerations are addressed in the workshop and include discussion about cartoon creation, material selection, and planning Andamento. Also discussed are the logistical considerations of large-scale works, such as sectioning the mosaic, organization and project management, site set up, equipment, health and safety, installation, and much more! As much of the course as possible will be hands-on practical work with each student creating their own mosaic panel as well as working on a collaborative large scale work.
All materials are included. No prerequisite.
Gary Drostle has been creating large scale mosaics using the paper faced reverse technique for over twenty five years, undertaking major commissions across the UK and in the USA, Canada and South America. His work has won numerous awards including the National Tile Contractors Association (USA) award for best mosaic in 2011 and the SAMA MAI Best in Show award 2013.
It wasn’t so long ago that if you had any interest in mosaics you would think of Italy, probably Ravenna first and Spilimbergo second and so the very fact that you are thinking about Chicago and mosaic schools in the same thought means that the mosaic world has shifted on its axis. Not just slightly, but one of those tectonic lurches that none of us can ignore. – H.M, Scotland
