Smalti Dimensions with Sue Giannotti
This 4-day workshop expands your smalti experience and explores the use of large-scale tesserae often seen in contemporary European mosaics. Sue Giannotti leads students in a workshop that focuses on various smalti techniques using chunky textural B-cuts, andamento alternatives, and color and value techniques-all designed for added impact in your work. Although mainly used in landscape and abstract art, these skills can be helpful in any type of mosaic. Using smalti from our inventory or Orsoni and Dona glass, the class go beyond the small brick-shaped cuts to experiment with large scale cuts and study why, when and how to incorporate both sizes into a mosaic. Students learn to expand their Hammer & Hardie skills to manipulate larger pieces of smalti for texture and interesting andamento options. Students are encouraged to bring a sketchbook and between 4 and 6 design inspirations (photos, sketches, recommended size 8’ x 10’) as starting points for their mosaic.
All materials are included. Prerequisite: Direct Method, Drawing for Mosaics, Hammer & Hardie.
